I Double Dog Dare You to Dig Right!

The grass is greening up. Trees and bushes are flowering. Daffodils are blooming. Add it all up, and it looks like we made it through one of the snowiest winters in Missouri history. There were times when it looked sort of doubtful, like winter would simply go on and on.

When warm weather chores involve digging or excavating, you’ll need to contact the Missouri One Call System (MOCS) so you don’t disrupt underground utility lines. Missouri law requires that any person making or beginning any excavation notify MOCS at least three but not more than ten working days in advance except in the case of an emergency.

Placing a locate request is free and easy! Call 1-800-DIG-RITE (800-344-7483) or 811. Homeowners can also place a request online at http://mo.itic.occinc.com/cgi-bin/mo_imenu_server.fcgi.

In order to complete your locate request MOCS operators will ask you the following questions:

  • Name
  • Telephone number
  • Type of work and equipment
  • Will you excavate on public right of way
  • Depth of excavation
  • What county
  • Where on the property the work will take place
  • City
  • House number
  • Street name
  • Names of the two intersecting streets that the job site is between

The utilities should respond to your request and mark the approximate location of their facilities with three working days. You can then proceed with your excavation avoiding damages.
