Hey Fido, will you friend me on Facebook?

Even if you don’t have opposable thumbs, it doesn’t mean you can’t have a Facebook account. A certain mammal I know named Henry (aka Fuzzy Butt) has his own profile, and I’m proud to call him my friend. Fuzzy Butt is part of the Canine Nation, and he is not the only dog to have his own Facebook profile.

In fact, a study commissioned by pet insurance company, PetPlan, shows that one in ten of all pets in the United Kingdom have their own Facebook page, Twitter profile or YouTube channel, and more than half of UK pet owners are sharing photos of their pets online. Even Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg’s dog, Beast, has a major online following of over 140,000 likes. The fan page, http://www.facebook.com/beast.the.dog is, of course, written “by” Beast – from his point of view.

Another recent study by Lab 42 found that 14% of dog owners have Facebook profiles for  their dogs.  Of those, about 42 percent have between one and 25 friends, while 20 percent have anywhere from 50 to hundreds and even thousands of likes.

I couldn’t find any statistics on cats’ social networking capabilities, but despite a lingering reputation for aloofness, I’m sure they represent themselves very well.
