Last January, Trevor Bonstetter, General Manager of West Kentucky Rural Telephone, had a big problem. His telephone company was right in the middle of a severe ice storm. West Kentucky’s service area was without power for several days and an estimated 6,000 of the telco’s customers were without telephone service at one time. His situation would have been much worse if he had not received help from 20 telephone companies—more than 60 workers—from seven states. In addition to the manpower, West Kentucky borrowed 56 generators to supplement its existing supply.
Kingdom was one of the phone companies to come to the rescue. Tom Young, Kingdom General Manager, dispatched volunteers Shawn (Installer/Repairman) and Regan (Cable Fault Locator/Fiber Optic Splicer) to help in the job of replacing over 50 telephone poles and re-hanging 400,000 feet of lines. Because of the assistance we gave, Kingdom was among the first companies to receive the newly-created National Telecommunication Cooperative Association (NTCA) Rapid Responders Award in September.
Shawn and Regan returned with many tales of their experiences in the ice storm clean-up. The people in the West Kentucky service area were suffering genuine hardship and were extremely grateful to see the folks who came to help. We’re glad we were able to do so – and glad, as well, that we have not had to cope with such a disaster here at home.
